Our Reading story this week was Thunder Rose, a tall tale about a girl born with enormous strength and the ability to even tame tornadoes! All three 5th grade classes got together to create Tall Tale Comics on iPads as a way to extend learning. We then did a Museum Walk so everyone could see each group's comic. It was fun to see the students collaborate so successfully in this cooperative learning activity. Many thanks to Mrs. Armstrong and Mrs. Hebert! It's fun for teachers to collaborate and cooperate too!
This first week of school, we've been focusing on building community activities. We used Play-dough to create a "Me Museum," did a Museum walk so that we could look at everyone's creations, then those who wanted to were able to share verbally with everyone. We also worked together to do a Marshmallow Tower challenge, building the tallest towers possible with only spaghetti noodles, tape, and a marshmallow in cooperative groups. Students shared things about themselves, such as favorite foods or number of pets, through a fun Skittles activity and with a dice game as well. Finally, we accepted the challenge to "Save Fred" in a fun, cooperative learning activity. Students worked with a partner to save Fred (a gummy worm) from drowning using only four paper clips and a life preserver (a gummy lifesaver)! They were only allowed to touch the paper clips with their hands, nothing else! It has been fun to watch the students work together so well, get to know each other, and build our D3 community! Thanks to my wonderful new students and their families, B2SN was a great success! I met many new friends and saw several familiar faces as well. I answered as many questions as I could, and we even got some of our supplies put away. I had a few visitors from last year and even had a couple from my old first grade classes. It was a long day, but a very fun evening. Now to get ready for tomorrow!
